In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expeditionary force from Mexico into what is now the American Southwest. His journey provides the backdrop for this contemporary mystery novel. Deputy Sheriff Calvin Creede mostly works alone in one corner of Arizona’s smallest county. His job has been a simple one until the day a flash flood exposes the rusted remains of an old pickup. A body in the truck turns out to be the long-lost son of a prominent ranching family, and forensic evidence shows it was murder. Deputy Creede faces a twenty-year-old cold case with too many suspects, from an ex-girlfriend and jealous family members, to drug lords and looters of archeological sites. The story unfolds amidst two issues affecting modern day southeastern Arizona the loss of native rangeland to exurban development, and tensions along the international border. Resolution of the case leaves both of these problems in place, but sheds fictional yet plausible light on a southwestern mystery that has been around for nearly five centuries.

Coronado Trail An Arizona Borderlands Mystery Volume 1 Carl Bock Jane Bock 9781945772061 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book! I used to live in Arizona and felt like I was back for a visit when I read this story. Already ordered the next one!!
A great mystery novel set in a fascinating landscape which the authors obviously know very well. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and hope that they will write more!
Let me confess bias at the outset, we are friends of the authors - but no matter. I doubt that any reader will dispute that this book is smart, complex and fun. It takes a pair of clever minds to weave the multiple threads of this book into a seamless fabric, a writing that reaches beyond entertainment. The Bocks know these grasslands, understand local lore, the culture -- both past and present -- grazing, botany, history and can tell a story. It's a recognizable genre, but told with cerebral panache.
Smartly written. Just enough history to keep the story moving forward. At no point does the reader get bogged down in historical minutiae. The story grabbed me from the opening sentences. Could not put the book down until the end. Looking forward to the continuing saga of Deputy Sheriff Calvin Creede. Please tell me there will be another book soon?
This is a great western type mystery with a very southwestern cast of characters. The descriptions of the area around the border of New Mexico and Arizona and Of the Nogales area are magnificent. I could smell the air. The story reminds me of Longmire...the characters of Cal and Maria and Luis are great and I look forward to more books about these folks. Truly a good read.
Coronado’s Trail immerses the reader in the sights, sounds, and personalities of the American Southwest. It’s a leisurely read written with a steady hand and a complex mystery with many moving parts to keep the reader engaged. I enjoyed returning time and again to Deputy Calvin Creede and the colorful denizens of Sonoita all the way to the satisfying end. Wonderful book.
Review of Coronado’s Trail by Carl and Jane Bock
Nobody knows the grasslands around Sonoita and Elgin, Arizona better than Jane and Carl Bock. They can describe it blade by blade of grass and feather by bird feather but share their professional knowledge so unobtrusively that it makes for colorful writing instead of boring detail. So if you crave books with “sense of place,” they will give it to you in quantity and quality.
Their hero, deputy sheriff Cal Creede, is a stalwart, even-tempered guy who remains level-headed whether surprised by a rattler in the dark or by a fierce enemy startled and irate that his cover is blown. Creede balances mentoring his assistant Larry with proving his own worth to his boss the county Sheriff, all while trying to figure out his girlfriend and whether they will get married or not.
There are many tangled threads Cal must sort out, from a 20-year-old disappearance filed as a cold case to a 200-year-old disappearance that even the Spanish explorer Coronado could not solve. How these threads are interlaced is not clear until the startling end.
Aided by the charming but quick-tempered Maria and using his analytic brain, his beginner’s knowledge of forensics, his hunches about people’s personalities, and just plain old-fashioned luck, Cal Creede pieces together a puzzle that the perpetrator thought everyone had left in the dirt. Dirt and mud that accumulated over years in the wash where a truck and a body are revealed by unprecedented floodwaters, that is.
If you love a good mystery with surprises at the end, and if you love the Southwest’s vistas and quirky weather, you will love this first in what promises to be an exciting series by Jane and Carl Bock. Like Longmire, Creede knows his territory and understands the people who live there. I predict that Cal Creede will soon become as popular as Longmire.
