Still reading, but great going. So many details and names, over a long period of time, a bit confusing, but does bring Ashoka and his times to life.Don't like his youngest rani at all.
Good description of mindset in ancient India, Hindu, Jain and Buddhist philosophies, not preachy so much, woven seamlessly into narrative.
Amazing it was written by a Dutch expert on India.

Ashoka the Great Wytze Keuning 9788129137135 Books Reviews
Looking at the size of the book, I thought it would be a historical treatise for scholars than for casual readers. I am glad that I was proven wrong. The only reason I picked up to read it was I belong to the city of Patliputra (now known as Patna) and was kind of curious as to how the book treats one of its most famous sons - Ashoka the Great. It is as unputdownable a book as I have ever read. The way the author builds the aura around Ashoka, his might, his sense of propriety and cunning is mindblowing. Thrilling is a word one would not often associate with historical biographies. This one is! Considering that this book was translated from its original dutch version, I am really jealous of those who can read and appreciate dutch. Another interesting fact that adds to the mystique around this book - this book was written by an author about who no proof exists if he ever visited India and did scholarly work with experts. However, the facts presented in the book are so authentic and contexts so originally Indian, that it is nothing short of magic!
